Music Theory Placement Test Dates and Guidelines
Music Theory placement tests are given every Fall semester, just before the beginning of classes, and at other times by special arrangement with the Department Chairperson.
For 2007-08, the test will be given on Monday, Aug. 27, 2:00-3:00 p.m., in Booth 204.
The Music Theory placement test is designed to determine whether a student should enroll in Music 151, Theory and Practice of Music I, or Music 101, Materials of Music. The essential prerequisites for Music 151 are the ability to read music, and basic knowledge of music fundamentals.
The placement test covers basic knowledge of simple rhythms, major and minor scales and key signatures, intervals, triads and 7th chords.
A good reference to prepare for this test is Tom Manoff’s The Music Kit ((W. W. Norton & Co., 4th edition), available from www.amazon.com and other booksellers (click on the image to wander over to Amazon):
Students who have received a grade of 4 or higher on the Music Theory Advanced Placement Test are not required to take the Oxy Music Theory placement test, subject to verification of their AP score by the Oxy Registrar.
