Use a good mixture of motion between voice pairs: parallel, similar,
oblique, contrary. ·
Stepwise motion prevails ·
Skips >4ths tend to be recovered by step or 3rd in
opposite direction ·
Avoid leaps of 6ths and 7ths in bass ·
Avoid augmented melodic skips (A2 and A4) ·
Avoid parallel perfect 1s/8ves and 5ths/12ths ·
Avoid contrary 5ths and 8ves ·
Avoid similar 5ths between S and B |

Spacing: <=8ve between S/A and between A/T. Bass and tenor (B/T)
may be farther apart. ·
Avoid voice crossing (where one part crosses above or below an
adjacent voice). ·
Double stable elements of a chord. Consonant triads: norm = root.
Diminished triads: norm = 3rd. 1st-inversion triads:
norm = S. Other possibilities exist. ·
Never double an active tone like the LT, chord 7th, or a
chromatically-altered tone. ·
If a triad or7th chord is incomplete, leave out 5th and
double the root. ·
Inverted 7th chords should be complete. ·
Make sure your inversion symbols (FB) are accurate and that you have
realized the FB correctly. |
